The owner was only going to back up a little to retrieve the deleted data of the past 24 hours, but he could not and the data that was deleted was far more than just the last 5 days of posts...so he has backed it up and all that data is back in the Forum.

Thank you for sharing this information. I was just sitting here wondering if i was going going crazy. Topics were missing that were here this morning. Posts i'd made in the last few days were gone. I was really thinking i had lost it. So i'm really glad i checked here to see if something was going on.

I use to help a friend with his web site a few years ago and I know all the problems that can happen when updating a site. Good luck getting all things sorted out.

Most likely it's gone for good. In the past when data has been lost it stays lost
and has been nonrecoverable.

I lost a former user name on the site that was just created a couple days ago. hence
having to start anew once more with this one.

Other users may have experienced this as well, mysterious things happen here all too
often unfortunatley.

I can not be blamed for that however, at least not now. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

Thats very unfortunate. Sounds like a systems administrator needs to be fired for not having a DAILY backup.
But considering this is most likely a site run by a small group people that won't happen.
In enterprise business situations a quick and swift personnel replacement would be in order.

There is a daily backup. Because of the time of day that this occurred the backup wasn't useful and we had to use the weekly backup instead.

This is not the fault of a sys admin its the fault of the mod that decided they had they right to delete a bunch of data.

Obviously the "backup" did more harm then good.

Perhaps the better scenario would have been to leave well enough alone and not
compound a bad situation any further.

Weighing it out where you have some threads gone missing and now losing a weeks
worth of postings, well that's a no brainer as to which is the greater loss.

Actually the backup saved over 30k posts and 500 threads compared to the loss of a few days it was an easy choice.

Well, I'm not much of a computer junkie so I don't know anything about a lot of this stuff. But, I do know the old expression often used by the IT types around here: "Shit Happens". What is gone is gone and, if its important to the peope who put it out there, they can repost it. I had a story that disappeared and I will do just that with it. Conversations in most of the threads can be picked back up at the break point. This is a social site so some missing chunks of conversation aren't the end of the world.

Now, if it was a weeks worth of International Banking Transacations, Stock Market Transactions or Government Transactions (ok, maybe they'd be better if they were lost), then it'd be a big thing.

Put into perspective, its an annoyance but we will all manage quite well even the system administrator / owner will have his blood pressure return to normal, learn to smile again and, maybe, even laugh. Right, Tiger? :-)
